One of the biggest mysteries of the 2018 season is New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick’s benching of Pro Bowl cornerback Malcolm Butler against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII.

Many rumors have been floated around as to why Butler was benched but now, finally, Butler is opening up about the situation.

On day after signing a five-year, $61 million deal with the Tennessee Titans, Butler spoke to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald about the benching. Butler says he hasn’t spoken to Belichick since the Super Bowl and thus doesn’t know for sure, be he has a theory:

I never got a reason, I feel like this was the reason: I got kind of sick. I went to the hospital. They probably thought I was kind of late on the game plan; I wasn’t as locked in as I should be and could have been a matchup deal. It could have been anything. But Bill Belichick has been doing this for a very long time.

“He took a veteran out of Super Bowl XLIX (against the Seahawks) and put in a first-year rookie, and that turned out right, so you could never question his decision. It didn’t work out right (against the Eagles). It didn’t work out the best for me or him or the New England Patriots. But I can say he won more than he lost, so it is what it is. I always have love for New England, Bill Belichick, Mr. Kraft, all those guys. Life just goes on.”

This would’ve been a perfect time for Butler to rip Belichick now that he got paid as a member of the Titans. But he didn’t, showing pure class while talking about his disappointment.

Paul Mctaggart He was scared! Didn’t want to have to be humiliated by the Eagles on the field so he chose to sit it out!

Carl Wagstaff  Taking the high road… in today’s world, that’s the road less traveled. Respect for doing the hard thing in order to move on.

Robert Dunn Pats fans act like Brady is never going to retire. His run is coming to the end and they are going to have to combine the browns and pats to go 7-9 once he’s finished.

Anthony Juarez Who gives a shit why he was benched! I’m sure it wouldn’t have made that big a difference, Eagles were a better team from the start. They lost so get over it and start worrying about next season

Nicolas Macaione Its all bull shit!

hes a kid, if i was benched in the superbowl for no reason, id be starting an uproar. he obviously did something stupid, and bill being the bigger person isnt going to speak up and ruin the kids career
