An NFL referee’s job is to uphold the integrity of the league and rulebook. That was far from the case in Sunday’s game between the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears. With the Lions facing a 20-13 deficit with 20 seconds remaining, Lions quarterback Jeff Driskel hit reciever Kenny Golladay on what looked to be a two-yard gain. After the play was over, Golladay spotted the ball and gifted himself a couple of extra yards. And the referees actually allowed it!
Were the officials day dreaming? Were they planning their post-game activities? This is inexcusable.
If one good thing can be taken out of this, it’s that this act of referee ineptitude played no impact on the final score, as the Bears held on to win the game, ending their four-game losing streak.
As if there weren’t enough tarnishes on the NFL product, this lackadaisical officiating crew will dominate headlines throughout the week.
